چکیده

ÐThe e€ect of defoliation on growth and on levels and allocation patterns of hydroxamic acids (Hx) in maize seedlings was evaluated 6 days after treatment. No signi®cant di€erences were found between defoliated and nondefoliated plants for the Hx concentration, relative Hx content and Hx-aglucone to Hxglucoside ratio in shoots, roots and root exudates, with the exception of Hx concentration in shoots, which decreased upon defoliation. However, growth of defoliated seedlings was considerably higher than that of nondefoliated ones. These results indicate that maize responds to defoliation by allocating its resources mainly to growth rather than to defence. Since previous work described the opposite strategy in rye, responses to defoliation in both species are discussed in relation to current theories of plant defence. # 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Responses of Maize (SC704) Yield and Yield Components to Source Restriction

Understanding the relationship between sink and source in maize is of prime importance in maize growing regions. In this study, a field experiment was carried out during spring and summer 2007 in the experimental field of the College of Agriculture, Shiraz University, to examine the effects of source restriction (defoliation) on sink size (yield and its components) of  SC704 maize hybrid.  A fa...

Study of Source Limitation and Combined Effect of Chemical and Biological Fertilizer on Yield and Qualitative Traits of Seed (lipid, Nitrogen and Protein Content) Corn

BACKGROUND: Nitrogen is a basic plant component, playing a decisive role in the intensification of plant production. Bio-fertilizers play a very significant role in improving soil fertility by fixing atmospheric nitrogen, both, in association with plant roots and without it, insoluble soil phosphates and produces plant growth substances in the soil. OBJECTIVES:</s...

Effects of drought stress and defoliation on sunflower (Helianthus annuus) in controlled conditions

Abstract In order to evaluate the effects of drought stress and defoliation on sunflower, a study was conducted under controlled conditions. Treatments were a combination of three levels of drought ((100, 60 and 30 percent of Field Capacity (FC)) and three levels of defoliation (control, removal of either 4 or 6 leaves from lower part of the plant) laid out, in a Completely Randomized Design w...

Examining Subsidy Polices on Maize Production in Iran (Panel Data approach)

Among the agricultural important factors, inputs are the most significant in agricultural production. This article aimed to examine the impact of government subsidy policies on production of one of the most strategic products, namely on production of one of the most strategic products, namely maize, in Iran. To achieve this goal, panel data for the nine provinces of Iran's major producers of ma...

Genotypic response to re-growth of defoliated sugar beets after re-watering in a water-limited environment: effects on yield and quality

Defoliation produced by abiotic factors and the subsequent re-growth can reduce sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) sucrose content and final sugar yield. Field experiments were conducted during 2003 and 2004 growing seasons in the farm of Hellenic Sugar Industry SA, Larissa factory, central Greece. Three sugar beet cultivars (Rival, Europa and Corsica) were ordinary irrigated till the beginning of J...
